Crape myrtle
Lagerstroemia indica, the crape myrtle, flowers from late summer with clusters of crinkled blooms in pink, lilac, red or white. The leaves colour well in autumn, and the smooth, peeling bark gives interest through the winter. It does best in full sun in a warm, sheltered spot, where it makes a striking small specimen tree.
Fine outdoors in mild, coastal spots. Inland it needs shelter, or a pot you can move somewhere frost-free over winter.
