About this plant

Liquidambar styraciflua, the sweet gum, has maple-like, star-shaped leaves that are famous for their autumn colour. Trained flat as an espalier, it gives summer screening along a boundary and a vivid wall of colour in autumn, taking up very little depth. The bare frame keeps a tidy structure through the winter.
